Fall Events at the Store
That I think you should know about, no matter where you live
We host 300+ events a year at Books Are Magic. I have nothing to do with booking the events, thank the lord—our events director is organized and decisive, two things that I am not, and so I can really stay out of it. An additional bonus of not being in charge of making the schedule is that I get to be delighted by it. Here are the book events that I’m doing this fall, plus two extra, just because. Our full schedule is PACKED—
, , , , Patricia Lockwood, Mona Awad, Patricia Smith, Jade Chang, Abby Hanlon, so many more!!!! Check out the FULL event list here. Click on the dates below to RSVP! - Sept 16Okay I am not doing this one but who cares, it’s SAMIN. Every time I read one of Samin’s recipes, or listen to her on a podcast, I just fall more and more in love. A good laugh is one of my favorite qualities in a human, and boy o boy does she have one. Also, we ordered this many books, so please come buy one of them.
Elena Sheppard- Sept 30
I met Elena because I used to live next-door to her parents, two of my favorite people on the planet. She was away at college, and when she came home, I felt lucky to scoop her up as one of my friends, too. Elena’s first memoir The Eternal Forest is about her Cuban grandmother, and family history, and I would love it even if I didn’t already love the people inside it.
- Oct 7I’ve written about how much I love Hetty many many times before, and this October I get to do it all in person! This is how many recipes I have marked that I want to cook in her new book, and below is an exciting surprise/jump scare in the Linger endpapers.
Since my father’s death, my family and I have been working on getting as many of his books reissued as possible. New covers, new forwards from writers he loved, the works. This evening will be a celebration of all of those things, with me and Kelly Link and Nat Cassidy and Dan Chaon. It’s going to be the best. If you like spooky books even remotely, please come, it will be joyous.
Aaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Just me n Mags. I will be breathing into a paper bag from this moment until the moment we walk on stage.
Quiara and I have a mutual friend, and he told me her first novel, The White Hot, was amazing. This was not surprising—Quiara is a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and is pretty much just dope as hell—but let me tell you, when I started reading this novel, I could not stop. It is incredible. So incredible that (shhhh! this is not actually announced yet) it’s going to be the second book in my book club, which you can sign up for here. Joining Quiara at the event will be our mutual friend, and you really just don’t want to miss it.
Hope to see you soon!

Impressive. I heard Margaret Atwood speak a couple of years ago. All I could think of was, this is what genius sounds like. She had a way of assembling ideas that had me shaking my head. Such a privilege.
Holy moly, what a line-up! I wish I didn't live 1,200 miles away!
