It's such a hard goodbye. When I lost my dad, my life cleaved in half. The time the only man who will ever think I'm perfect was with me, and the time after, when I knew I would miss him for the rest of my life. Hugs, and be good to yourself.
Emma, you are a comfort on a cold, rainy, New Years Eve afternoon. Your emails feel like communication from a friend. Your Substack has become more than "lighthearted book tour fun", because you got real. Honest. Connecting and belonging are two words that resonate for so many. You are a connector and you make everyone feel that they belong.
Happy New Year! Thank you for sharing Books Are Magic, and your newsletter, and particularly this one.
I must confess, I didn't know who Joey McIntyre was - New Kids On The Block didn't really make it to the U.K. - but this led me to making my first Wikipedia contribution ever(!) after looking him up and noticing a formatting error. It feels nice to start the year off by dripping a small drop into the ocean of Wikipedia.
I think anyone can edit it. For the photo, I *think* it needs to be a creative commons licensed photo and available online somewhere cite-able. Afaik anyone is okay to edit it except (I think) the person an article is about.
If you're aware of a clear, relevant, creative commons photo of you in a cite-able place, someone should be able to update it and cross fingers for approval :)
Happy New Year and thank you for writing with such honesty and style. It’s a great inspiration as I start my own Substack (and the first time sharing my writing with anyone other than a teacher or my husband).
This newsletter has become a bright spot in a tough year for me — also lost my dad this past summer. I just finished This Time Tomorrow, and I know I’ll go back and reread it more than once in the coming years. Thanks for it, and for all the light you bring into the world!
love this! I shared today on Instagram my favorite books that I read this year: Between Two Kingdoms, Memphis, Take My Hand, and This Time Tomorrow, with TTTomorrow as book of the year. It's such a beautiful love letter.
Happy New Year, Emma! Thank you for all that you have written about and shared via this Substack this year - it's all been beautiful and funny and real. I loved This Time Tomorrow and also The Vacationers and Modern Lovers, which I read this year as well. I've also so appreciated your recommendations - Dead Eyes and All There Is in particular which I don't think I would have found without you. Wishing you all the best in 2023!
My birthday too! NKOTB was my first concert. 13 yrs old. I’m a little behind on my reading (December swallowed me whole), but I always love seeing your newsletter in my inbox.
Here for all the grief blogging. Sing it, girl. 😘

If you can edit Wikipedia, can you change my photo there??? It’s a horrible picture with a giant Amazon banner behind me, and it hurts my soul!

Happy New Year Emma!! Wanted to say I love your newsletter so much and always look forward to it :)
I get all of your 90’s references! Being born in 1980 myself. 90210 and NKOTB were life as was Melrose Place 😆
Happy everything to you, Emma! Thank you for oodles of good reading whether your books, these missives, your book recommendations!
Wishing you comfort and joy in the new year, and good health to you and yours!
I just love your words so much and this newsletter. Have the happiest of new years!
