Think about who takes the time to write hate mail...if you're getting it, you're doing something very right. Your writing brings so much happiness and inspiration to so many, as does this newsletter, your store, and you!!
Thank you for the list! I’m so sorry you have received some hate mail😢. Just a reflection of the state of our world. We are celebrating Winter Solstice in full force this year. Living in the PNW, where the sun( which does not like to make an appearance very often) sets at 4:30, it is just dark. So we will stomp into the wet woods at night with candles and bless the trees.
Shout out, also, for the question: "Is this a December problem, or a January problem?" which helps me focus on what needs to happen now, and what can wait. December is tough, especially if there's grief involved. Just getting through is enough.
Gotdamn mess is right. I’m so sorry you have to deal with that. (Hate mail)
What a cozy list. One of my favorite things in life is giving and receiving handwritten notes. 💞
Im so sad the Gilded Age is already over. We need 16 episodes instead of 8! Annnnnd now the theme song is stuck in my head 😍 the only sensible thing to do now is some interpretive dance around the house while I blast it at full volume. Try it...it’s delightful!
Emma, we love you. As the recipient of one of your thank you notes recently, I can't tell you how much it bought a smile to my face. It went straight into my treasure box. You are right, friends are good. Much love xxxx
I worked on a behind-the-scenes story about The Gilded Age's production team and they mentioned that the crew made a shirt that said STILL GILDING. Relatable! I myself have often been STILL GILDING.
Thank you for writing one of my all-time favorite books ever, 'This Time Tomorrow.' Your words went straight from the page to my heart. I will treasure that experience always. You have a fan for life.
Best wishes from another member of the dead Dad club.
Thank you for an uplifting and encouraging column. Fun photo of your bookstore buddies! Wish I could visit, but a trip to Brooklyn is not likely anytime soon. Thought you’d want to know that clicking on the cookie recipe runs into a paywall for the NYT, but, oh well. Wishing you and all fellow readers a merry 2024.
Highly recommend no. 9. And for those thinking of doing it who -- like me -- lack the self-discipline to just Not pick up their phone and hit the app, IG allows one to temporarily *disable* their account, which means no one will see it, or be able to send you a DM. But your posts, past DMs, follows, and followers will all be there when you sign back in.
I just made gluten-free peanut butter blossoms and they’re better than the regular ones. Problem: I wasn’t paying attention when I unwrapped the Hershey’s Kisses so I have about a hundred more than I need.

Read a delightful column from one of your favorite writers, Emma Straub. ❤️ Sorry about the haters. This is only love coming to you.
The Gilded Age YES...and also many thoughts on The Curse...it’s so weird and GREAT...and weird...
See as much music and art as you can. Remember the wonderful things that humans create.

Love this list and hate hate mail. I made those cookies yesterday and decided to freeze them so we can bake as needed on bad or good days. 👍🏼
I need a new show so I’ll check out the Gilded Age!
Yes to The Gilded Age! Those clothes and hats!
