If you’re not in the path from Canada to NYC, this is what the city feels like right now:
The air is better today than it was yesterday, but it’s still gross. The worst part is the 2020 PTSD—figuring out what to do at the bookstore, doing some panic grocery shopping, talking to the kids about their fears, and rumors from school. Luckily we have a few air purifiers from the olden days to use at the stores, and boxes of masks, but jeez. I am not enjoying this walk down memory lane.
Last week feels like a hundred years ago. MONDAY feels like a hundred years ago. This week I’ve been to a viola performance and a 1st grade sing, and tomorrow is the 1st grade play. It really is true that June and December are the same. Too much too much too much. Anyway, here’s a peek at my event at Symphony Space with Meg Wolitzer last week, as you can tell, I had a terrible time. The photos were taken by DeShaun Craddock, and I will be forever grateful. Let’s walk through my emotions, shall we?
Another fun non-smog related thing: dresses with pockets! Why would anyone wear something with pockets? Literally beyond me. I have one dress that I love without pockets and all I do is reach for the pockets that aren’t there. If you too love pockets, maybe you need a dress from the Pockets Project? Look how cute! And they’re giving away my book!
My kids are out of school next week, and I’m bringing the whole family on another mini-leg of book tour, so if you live in Chatham, MA or on Nantucket, hope to see you soon! Other than that, I’m back to my regularly-scheduled programming of trying to figure out how to get in as many swimming pools as possible between now and September. I hate summer, but I love swimming pools.
Okay, one last good thing about summer: my girl Jenny Han just dropped the trailer for Season 2 of The Summer I Turned Pretty. Hallelujah. (You KNOW I hate Amazon, but this is bigger than me.)
Please reply below with your favorite swimming pool OR your favorite dress with pockets. Thanks in advance for helping me plan my life.
The thing on the homepage of that Pockets Project site where the woman pulls an entire bottle of wine out of her pocket is AMAZING. I can't stop thinking about what huge and surprising thing I could pull out of one of those pockets. (Once, in an old Hardy Boys, they talk about their friend Chet putting an entire roast chicken in his pocket, and now I have a lovely image of Chet in one of these dresses, buying a rotisserie chicken, saying, "oh, no, I don't need a bag" to the cashier.)
As someone who copied you and bought the Corey Lynn Calter dress, let me suggest Lesley Evers (https://lesleyevers.com/pages/about-lesley) a woman owned design studio out of Oakland ca! Dresses are fun, beautiful, and have pockets ❤️
PS I visited Books are Magic last week while in NYC!!
